Third Thursday - Art in Athens

Third Thursday events and exhibitions for October 19

The next Third Thursday - the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia - is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

This Third Thursday will offer four events in addition to the exhibitions.

Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia
Museum Mix, 8 – 11 p.m. - The museum's thrice-annual late-night art party features a live deejay, free refreshments and galleries open until 11 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Reindeer Games and WesdaRuler. Free admission.

  • "Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête" - This exhibition, organized by Aperture Foundation, New York, includes works by acclaimed contemporary artist Mickalene Thomas as well as works by artists who inspired her.
  • "Modern Masters from the Giuliano Ceseri Collection" - 19th- and 20th-century drawings from the private collection of Giuliano Ceseri.
  • "Louise Blair Daura: A Virginian in Paris" - This exhibition showcases all known works of Louise Blair Daura, a skilled portraitist form Virginia. It is the first attempt by a museum to examine her short career as an artist.
  • "Martha Odum: Art Intersects Ecology" - To celebrate the 50th anniversary of UGA's Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology, this exhibition features landscape paintings by Martha Odum, Eugene Odum's wife, as well as other works related to ecology.

Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries, University of Georgia
Safety Second, a flute and percussion duo dedicated to the performance of new music, will perform in the Lupin Gallery at 8 p.m.

On view:

  • "Rosemary Mayer: Beware of All Definitions" - Rosemary Mayer, an underrepresented post-minimalist and feminist artist who died in 2014, is the focus of this small survey. "Beware of All Definitions" covers a rich period in Mayer's career in which she moved from making geometric paintings on shaped canvases to drawings to sculptural works featuring dyed and draped fabrics.
  • "SEWW" - Inspired by the League of Lady Wrestlers that originated in Dawson City, Canada, the South East Women Wrestlers was formed in Athens, Georgia, in the summer of 2017 to continue the tradition of subverting patriarchal oppression and the male gaze through spectacle. The exhibition, organized by MFA candidate Kaleena Stasiak, presents more of an art performance than an actual wrestling league.
  • "To Be Black and Female: Reflecting on Black Feminism and African American Women's Art in Museums" - Amber Coleman curated this exhibition in conjunction with her applied project for her master's of art education at the Dodd. The purpose of this project is to critically examine and artistically reflect on how Black feminist theory can be utilized to educate art museum visitors and curate African American women's art in museums.
  • "Undermined" - Undermined is a collaborative conversation between three MFA candidates in Textile Design and two MFA candidates in ceramics. Yeonsoo Kim and Esther Mech created ceramic and pottery pieces that Amanda Britton, Erin Geagon and Johanna Norry responded to and manipulated using traditional textile materials and techniques, seeking to undermine the function of the original object, thus reframing the way the object could be engaged with and viewed.

Lyndon House Arts Center
Gallery Talk with artist Thom Houser, 6 – 8 p.m. - Thom Houser has created a unique installation using photographs, video and light sculpture. Selected from exhibition proposal applications, this exhibition explores stairways as a metaphor for transformation and connections on multiple levels.
