Firefly Trail Dedication Ceremony

The Leisure Services Department will host a dedication ceremony and open the newly completed Athens-Clarke County portion of the Firefly Trail on Friday, October 20 at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to walk or ride the trail. All non-motorized users are welcome!

Attendees will assemble at the Firefly Trailhead on East Broad Street, near Pottery Street. Parking is available at the Cook and Brother Plaza in designated Greenway parking spaces and the Classic Center Parking Deck.

The Firefly Trail is a planned 39-mile rail-trail from Athens to Union Point in Northeast Georgia, connecting Athens-Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Greene Counties. The historic rail line, known as the Athens Branch of the Georgia Railroad, branched off the still-active Augusta-to-Atlanta line in Union Point and passed through the towns of Woodville, Maxeys, Stephens, Crawford, Arnoldsville, and Winterville on its way to Athens.

In the future, this project will include the establishment of an improved surface trail for non-motorized vehicles along the historic Georgia Railroad corridor between East Broad Street and the intersection of Old Winterville Road and Little Oak Street. The trail will allow for pedestrian and bicyclist alike to safely participate in activities within Athens-Clarke County without being within close motor vehicle proximity. The project includes three bridges along the trail corridor with educational and informational signage.
