Artist Lawrence Stueck's dynamic and interactive 'Gyroscope House', being permanently installed at the World of Wonder Playground (325 Whit Davis Rd, Athens, GA), will be celebrated July 4th, 9-11 am. This is the latest public art collaboration between the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission's, Athens-Clarke County's Public Art Master Plan, SPLOST and a citizens' user group.

The holiday morning event at the playground will have free snacks, face painting, chalk art and a brief presentation by the artist.

Stueck's playscape was selected from an open call for submissions. He is an artist and teacher at Athens Academy, with a doctorate in Art Education from the University of Georgia. He's dedicated to creating engaging educational environments for young learners with over 80 play-sculpture installations. Gyroscope House is designed to enhance children's understanding of eco-systems and geography through graphics and motion. Stueck wants the user to gain a greater sense of themselves in space, nature and scale: a large colorful map on the floor allows children to physically position themselves in the center of town, compass points and prisms add directionality as well as the play of sunlight, there's a windmill, and a 360° frieze of color all incorporating exploration and discovery into their play.

This public artwork is the first SPLOST affiliated commission installed since the passing of the Athens-Clarke County's Public Art Master Plan in March of this year.
