Father's Day at Zoo Atlanta offer

CELEBRATE FATHER'S DAY AT ZOO ATLANTA

Highlights include free admission for dads and a birthday celebration for the world's oldest living male gorilla

WHO:                       Treat Dad this Father's Day with an exclusive admission offer and a chance to celebrate animal fathers throughout Zoo Atlanta. On Sunday, June 18, fathers enjoy free admission with purchase of any regularly-priced child's or adult's general admission ticket.

WHAT:                    A highlight of this year's Father's Day festivities will be a birthday celebration for western lowland gorilla Ozzie. At 56, Ozzie is the world's oldest living male gorilla.

One of the original pioneers of what is now North America's largest zoological population of gorillas, Ozzie has nine children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren living at Zoo Atlanta and at other Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoos around the U.S. Nearly half of the members of Zoo Atlanta's gorilla population are his descendants.

Ozzie's legacy is much more than a study in gorilla genealogy. In his years at Zoo Atlanta, he has made lasting contributions to the future of his species. Now classified as critically endangered, western lowland gorilla populations have declined dramatically since Ozzie's youth. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), over a 25-year period, the combined threats of poaching, illegal hunting for the bushmeat trade, habitat loss and disease have reduced their numbers by 60 percent, with declines of as much as 90 percent in some parts of their range in western Africa. North American zoo populations are overseen by the AZA Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which seeks to maintain a self-sustaining, genetically diverse gorilla population for future generations.

Wish Ozzie well at 10:30 a.m. at Gorilla Habitat Two. In addition to the birthday celebration, animal fathers around the Zoo will enjoy special themed enrichment surprises. Animal activities are weather-permitting.

The Father's Day discount is valid only on Sunday, June 18, 2017, and may not be combined with any other discount. Fathers do not require a ticket if accompanied by a child or adult with a regularly-priced ticket, which may be purchased online on zooatlanta.org or at Zoo Atlanta Admissions.
