Celebrate National Trails Day with ACCLS

Celebrate National Trails Day in Athens on Saturday, June 3.  The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department's Park Services Division staff has recently completed repairing and re-building two favorite foot trails for the community's hiking pleasure.

Cook's Trail, from Sandy Creek Nature Center to Sandy Crek Park, has been repaired and in some places rebuilt.  Citizens can now walk the entire 4.1 miles, plus the 0.8 mile Oxbow Loop.  On Saturday, June 3, Walt Cook will lead a hike that will showcase this trail. Those interested are encouraged to attend and meet at Sandy Creek Nature Center, located at 205 Old Commerce Road, at 8:30 a.m. A van will be available for the return trip.

For a shorter hike, the Fred Birchmore Trail in Memorial Park has been re-opened for a pleasant loop hike. The trail has two new fiberglass bridges, replacing the old wooden bridges that were closed for safety, due to decay.  Also, for a more pleasant walking experience, several steep portions were re-routed to a gentler grade.  So, come and enjoy the one-mile walk and see the famous "Great Wall of Happy Hollow," the incredible stone wall built entirely by Athens' own Fred Birchmore.  For a guided hike, meet at the trailhead near Bear Hollow Zoo, on Saturday, June 3 at 9:00 am.

As good as the trail may be, if all one could see from it were an impenetrable wall of privet, the experience would not be worth the effort.  The all-volunteer Weed Warriors have been active in Memorial Park for seven years, removing the exotic privet, wisteria, and other non-native weedy vegetation.  The improvement of the view is outstanding.  Accordingly, Cary Crider, a member of the Weed Warriors will lead and interpret this loop hike.  Help celebrate National Trails Day, June 3, and enjoy either of these two great trails of which Athens can be rightfully proud.
