Mother's Day at Zoo Atlanta

SPEND MOTHER'S DAY AT ZOO ATLANTA

Human mothers enjoy free admission, and animal mothers enjoy Mother's Day surprises on May 14

WHO:                       Mom's the word on Sunday, May 14, 2017, during a Zoo Atlanta-wide celebration of mothers of all species. Mothers enjoy free admission with purchase of any regularly-priced child's or adult's general admission ticket. Animal moms around the Zoo will enjoy themed enrichment.

WHAT:                    From Lun Lun the giant panda to Zelda the wreathed hornbill to Shirley the warthog to the naked mole rat queen, the Zoo's many animal mothers will find their habitats bedecked with decorations, special foods and other treats. Mother's Day is one of many annual spotlights on Zoo Atlanta's robust animal enrichment program, in place for all species year-round. Enrichment, which may take the form of objects, novel foods or activities, is designed to stimulate animals' natural behaviors while promoting their well-being.

Zoo Atlanta will also observe one Zoo mother's birthday on Mother's Day. Madu the Sumatran orangutan, who turns 34 on May 13, has adopted four orangutan infants over the years, including 2-year-old Keju, who arrived at the Zoo in 2015. Madu and her group will enjoy birthday surprises at 2:30 p.m. at Orangutan Habitat

Two.

The Mother's Day discount is valid only on Sunday, May 14, 2017, and may not be combined with any other discount. Mothers do not require a ticket if accompanied by a child or adult with a regularly-priced ticket, which may be purchased online on zooatlanta.org or at Zoo Atlanta Admissions.

Zoo Atlanta Members, who already enjoy free admission year-round, may also treat mothers to a Zoo day on Mother's Day. Members may bring up to two mothers at no charge, provided mothers are accompanied by an individual named on the Membership.

ABOUT:                About Zoo Atlanta

Viewed as one of the finest zoological institutions in the U.S. and a proud accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Zoo Atlanta has a mission to inspire value and preservation of wildlife through a unique mix of education and outdoor family experiences. From well-known native wildlife to critically endangered species on the brink of extinction, the Zoo offers memorable close encounters with more than 1,000 animals from around the world. Zoo highlights include giant pandas, including Ya Lun and Xi Lun, a set of twins born to Lun Lun on September 3, 2016; North America's largest zoological population of great apes; and a global center of excellence for the care and study of reptiles and amphibians. Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience, featuring more than 70 species in a 111,000 square-foot complex, is the world's first LEED Gold-certified reptile and amphibian exhibit. The Zoo's newest experience, Treetop Trail presented by Kaiser Permanente, opened in March 2017. Up-close-and-personal animal experiences include behind-the-scenes Wild Encounters with African elephants, Aldabra giant tortoises, giant pandas and warthogs. Zoo Atlanta is open daily with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Keeper talks, interactive wildlife shows, education programs and special events run year-round.
