Storytime honoring Harriet Powers

Athens-Clarke County Library presents storytime honoring Harriet Powers

The Athens-Clarke County Library continues Black History Month programming with a special storytime honoring local quilter and African-American folk artist Harriet Powers on Thursday, Feb. 16.

"Harriet Powers: Sewing Stories and Stitching Stars" will take place in the library's Storyroom at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16. Children ages 4 to 11, along with their caregivers, are invited to learn about Powers, see a replica of one of her quilts, and make their own story quilts!

Powers was born into slavery near Athens in 1837 and spent all of her life in the local area. Her work is considered among the finest examples of 19th century Southern quilting, yet only two of her quilts are known to exist. Her "Bible Quilt" is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution and the other quilt, "Pictorial Quilt" is part of the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Powers used traditional appliqué quilting techniques to record local legends, Bible stories and astronomical events. Powers died on Jan. 1, 1910, and is buried at Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery in Athens.
