The Magician's Hat

The Athens-Clarke County Library is proud to host the premiere of the play, The Magician's Hat, presented by the UGA Children's Theatre Troupe in association with Read with Malcolm.

The play will take place on Saturday, June 11, at noon in the Appleton Auditorium. The play is based on the book The Magician's Hat by Malcolm Mitchell and was adapted for the stage by Ali Olhausen and Geoffrey Aaron Douglas.

Former University of Georgia wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell received national attention for joining a women's book club in 2014, and now, Mitchell isn't just an avid reader; he's an author. Published in 2015, The Magician's Hat tells the story of David, a magician who loves to perform magic, but his favorite trick is not pulling a rabbit out of a hat or finding quarters behind children's ears. Instead, David knows the magical power of books, which can help you explore your dreams and develop creativity.

Mitchell founded Read with Malcolm, which has become a beacon for literacy. He gave a copy of The Magician's Hat to every first-grade student in Athens-Clarke County earlier this year and regularly reads to groups of children. On June 4, Mitchell was named as the Children's Author of the Year by the Georgia Writers Association. Mitchell recently was drafted by the New England Patriots.

Olhausen is a senior at the University of Georgia majoring in theatre and earning a certificate in British and Irish studies. She is a member of the Ballroom Performance Group and is the artistic director of the UGA Children's Theatre Troupe.

Douglas is a third-year student in the theatre and performance studies PhD program at the University of The UGA Children's Theatre Troupe aims to provide a venue for entertainment, enrichment and education for children through theatrical performances.
