UGA Vet School Annual Open House

Teddy bear surgery

Our Open House, held annually in late March or early April, rain or shine, demonstrates the exciting and rewarding aspects of a career in veterinary medicine. There will be many demonstrations and exhibits about animals and/or highlighting the diverse career choices from which graduates in veterinary medicine may choose. The 2015 event will be held on Friday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our typical Open House activities include:

  • Concessions (hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, chips) and bake sale - in front and back of the College
  • Teddy Bear Surgery - Building 10 (the Anatomy Lab)
  • Hospital tours - sign-up will be in the old Large Animal Hospital breezeway; tour space is limited
  • Live animal displays - in front of the College
  • Exotic animal displays
  • Anatomy display - Building 10 (the Anatomy Lab)
  • Medical Booths - cardiology, endoscopy, dentistry, radiology and ultrasound, hip dysplasia, parasitology and more!
  • "Reading to Dogs" program
  • Club and business displays - Vet Med Reading Room

Guided tours of the new UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital facilities (which opens on March 25) will be available throughout the day. Please note that we have limited spaces available on these tours, so please inquire early on the day of the event if you are interested in a tour of our new Hospital. There will be a sign-up area for these tours located in the breezeway of the old Large Animal Hospital (on our main campus) on the day of the event. Attendees who sign up for tours will be escorted and shuttled to the new Hospital for their tour. Only attendees who are signed-up, escorted and shuttled to the new Hospital will be given a tour. You must be at least 16 years old to tour the new Hospital.

Other interesting exhibits for Open House will focus on topics such as the life of a veterinary student, computers in veterinary medicine, animal behavior, equine reproduction, herd health and others.

Admission to the Open House is FREE and the public is invited. Please pass along this information to individuals or groups in your community or school who might be interested in learning more about the rapidly changing and scientifically challenging world of veterinary medicine.
