Movie Night: The Gold Rush - Charlie Chaplin

The Athens-Clarke County Library invites you to put Georgia's winter in perspective with a free screening of Charlie Chaplin's 1925 masterpiece, The Gold Rush, on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The film screening is part of the library's new "Movie Night" film series, which features classic and modern films that have not received the attention they deserve.

The Gold Rush is the film that the great Charlie Chaplin wanted people to remember him for. Chaplin's Tramp ventures to savage, wintry Alaska to seek his fortune mining gold but finds bears, snowstorms, starvation, frostbite and heartbreak instead. The film features some of celluloid's best slapstick comedy mixed with romance, satire and commentary on what else--The Great American Dream. The Gold Rush makes looking hungry, cold and miserable downright cozy.

Directed by Charlie Chaplin, this film is black & white and is not rated. It is 95 minutes long. The screening will take place in the library's Appleton Auditorium.

On Feb. 19, join us to view Woody Allen's charming anti-romance, The Purple Rose of Cairo, at "Movie Night: Meta-Romance Edition."

"Movie Night" films are free and open to the public. However, the series is intended for mature audiences. Parents may find the content unsuitable for children. For more information, please call (706) 613-3650, ext. 356. The Athens-Clarke County Library is located at 2025 Baxter Street, Athens.
