Oconee Youth Playhouse presents Beauty & the Beast

Oconee Youth Playhouse will present the beloved Broadway musical Beauty & The Beast for six performances at the Oconee County Civic Center in January. Shows are Jan. 9-11 and Jan. 16-18, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.

The cast of local young people is headed by Cameron Loyal, a junior at Clarke Central High School, as the Beast, while the role of Belle is shared by Ivy Hitchcock, a homeschooled junior, and Bailey Chastain, a junior at North Oconee High School.

Other featured performers include Alex Joyner, a senior at NOHS, as Gaston; Simon Beckham, an NOHS junior, as Lefou; Sam Thompson, a senior at Clarke Central, as Lumiere; Alec Peyton, an NOHS junior, as Cogsworth; Kacie Chasteen, an NOHS senior, as Mrs. Potts; Annabelle Woodard, a sophomore at Athens Academy, as Babette; and Mamie Davis, an NOHS junior, as Madame de la Grande Bouche.

"We presented Beauty & The Beast once before in 2007 at the Classic Center in downtown Athens," says Shane Hannon, who is directing the current production with his wife, Terra. "We are excited to be doing the show again and to have such a large and talented cast."

Dick Hoard, the pastor at Oconee River Church, will reprise his role from OYP's 2007 show as Belle's father, Maurice. The only other cast member from the earlier show is Chastain, who previously was cast as a Champagne Bubble. Chastain has appeared in a total of 25 OYP shows since getting started as a first grader in 2005.

"As always, we have quite a number of veteran OYP performers in this show, who audiences will no doubt recognize from other roles," says Hannon. "But we also have a lot of kids, especially young ones, who are doing their very first OYP show."

The cast ranges in age from kindergarteners through high school students, drawn from 28 schools in Clarke, Oconee and surrounding counties.

Tickets for Beauty & The Beast will be on sale at Oconee Youth School of Performance Jan. 5-8 from 4-6 p.m. and also in the lobby of the Oconee County Civic Center starting an hour before each show. Prices are $16 adults, $14 students/seniors and $12 age 12 and under. Cash or check only.
