Marjorie Agosín to Visit the ACC Library

Marjorie Agosín to Visit the Athens-Clarke County Library, October 12

Professor, author and poet Marjorie Agosín will visit the Athens-Clarke County Library on Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m. to talk about her latest book, I Lived on Butterfly Hill.

In I Lived on Butterfly Hill, Agosín's first book written for older children (grades five through eight), she tells the story of Celeste Marcoini, who wants to be a writer when she grows up. But when life starts to change - neighbors and classmates begin to disappear, military ships crowd the harbor – her parents go into hiding and send her to live in America. Booklist and School Library Journal give the book starred reviews.

Agosín was raised in Chile, but her family moved to the United States due to the overthrow of the Chilean government by General Pinochet's military coup. Coming from a South American country and being Jewish, Agosín's writings demonstrate a unique blending of these cultures.

Along with being a prolific writer, Agosín is a well-known spokesperson for the plight and priorities of women in Third World countries. Her deep social concerns and accomplishments have earned her many awards and recognitions, and she has gained an international reputation among contemporary women of color.

Agosín has received the Letras de Oro Prize for her poetry. Her writings about, and humanitarian work for, women in Chile have been the focus of feature articles in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor and Ms. Magazine. She has also won the Latino Literature Prize for her poetry.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is part of their ongoing Café au Libris series. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.

The event will take place in the Appleton Auditorium with a reception to follow. For more information, please visit the library or call (706) 613-3650. The Athens-Clarke County Library is located at 2025 Baxter Street, Athens.
