BlackPoet Ventures

BlackPoet Ventures

As part of their five-day residency with the University of Georgia, BlackPoet Ventures will visit the Athens-Clarke County Library on two separate occasions.

The Phoenix-based group will visit the Teen Writing Group on Thursday, October 2, at 4 p.m. and will give a presentation in the Appleton Auditorium on Saturday, October 4, at 4 p.m.

The Teen Writing Group visit will include activities in storyboarding, table top work and blocking. The group will also discuss message, music and movement. The event is open to teens ages 11 to 18 and will be held in Multipurpose Room A.

In the Appleton Auditorium on Saturday, October 4, BlackPoet Ventures will present a spoken word performance featuring original poetry and excerpts from BlackPoet Ventures 'poeticductions' which are presentations of poetic diction on stage through spoken word, music, dance, song and visual art.

Believing all art is poetry, BlackPoet Ventures formed in 2005 in an effort to make performance poetry more interesting. Since October of that year, the arts organization has existed to promote, support and enhance the oral tradition artistry of poetry and spoken word movements of the African Diaspora.

This workshop and performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the University of Georgia Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Institute for African American Studies.

Both events are free and open to the public. Please visit the library or call (706) 613-3650 for more information. The Athens-Clarke County Library is located at 2025 Baxter Street, Athens.
