Banned Books Scavenger Hunt

Banned Books Scavenger Hunt at the Athens-Clarke County Library
This year, the annual Banned Books Week will be held from Sunday, Sept. 21, to Saturday, Sept. 27. Join the Athens-Clarke County Library's Teen Department to celebrate a little early with the Banned Books Scavenger Hunt on Friday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. Starting in the Multipurpose Rooms, the afterhours event will allow teens in grades six through 12 to use clues to team up and search for banned books hidden throughout the library. Snacks will also be served.

Since 1982, Banned Books Week has served as the national book community's annual celebration of the freedom to read. Hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events.

According to the event's official website, more than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. In 2013 alone, 307 challenges were reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom.

The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Stop by the Teen Desk or call (706) 613-3650, ext. 329, to reserve your spot.
