Jump for Darius

Calling All Athens Daredevils
If leaping off a 40-foot platform onto a giant airbag were to help cure the number one genetic killer of children in the world, would you take the plunge?

Athenian Darius Weems (of Darius Goes West fame) is double-dawg daring local residents to take the plunge in an effort to help the nonprofit he inspired win up to $1 million for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) research.

Darius was born with this fatal disease and lost his older brother, Mario, to DMD at age 19. The life expectancy for boys with DMD is typically late teens to early twenties. Darius will celebrate his 25th birthday in September. DMD research is burgeoning but remains underfunded.

"Jump for Darius" could make a huge impact in that regard. The event is going down in Atlanta on July 22, when the TV show "Dare Me for Charity" visits Georgia. With cameras rolling, they'll be filming teams jumping off an adjustable (up to 40 feet) platform into a giant airbag. Following the jump, teams will be interviewed and asked why they were willing to take a "leap of faith" for their charity. Teams with the most jumpers-and teams with individual team members who jump the most-win cash prizes, as well as a spot on the "Dare Me for Charity" TV show when it airs in the fall.

Daniel Epting, known as the "crazy driver" in the multi-award-winning documentary, Darius Goes West, is captain of Atlanta's "Jump for Darius" team. To join the fun, you must be at least 10 years old, weigh less than 300 pounds and be able to jump without assistance. The cost for three jumps is $15, and there is no limit to the number of jumps you can purchase.
