Get Outdoors Georgia Day at Sweetwater Creek State Park

Free "Get Outdoors Georgia Day" set for June 14
Adventurous Activities Get Families Outside

Stand-up paddle boarding, archery and tree climbing are just some of the free activities offered during "Get Outdoors Georgia Day" on June 14. Hosted by Sweetwater Creek State Park just west of Atlanta, the celebration encourages Georgians of all ages to sample a variety of outdoor recreation. Visitors can also watch live animal programs and browse environmental booths. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 14, and is part of the seventh annual "National Get Outdoors Day" created by Get Outdoors USA.

Throughout the day, visitors can try canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and aquacycling on the park's 215-acre lake. Volunteers will teach fly tying and casting, while the Georgia Department of Natural Resources offers shooting sports and live wildlife programs. Technology fans can try out treasure hunting with the Georgia Geocachers Association. Disc golf will be available as well.

Several booths will offer information about enjoying Georgia's great outdoors, such as Leave No Trace, Edge of Night Camping Club, Greening Youth Foundation, Georgia Grown and the state's First-Time Camper program. An imagi-play zone and recreation station will be set up for children. Chick-fil-A will sell lunch items, and visitors may also bring picnics. The event is in partnership with the American Recreation Coalition and is supported by Coleman, Walmart, SC Johnson OFF!, Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, and local Chick-fil-A stores.

Sweetwater Creek State Park is located at 1750 Mt. Vernon Road in Lithia Springs. A free shuttle will be available from event parking at Lithia Springs High School (2520 East County Line Road). Event details are listed on www.GeorgiaStateParks.org.

Because June is "National Get Outdoors Month," dozens of additional events will be hosted by state parks all across Georgia. For a complete list of programs, such as cave tours and frog walks, visit www.GaStateParks.org/events.
