Athens-Clarke County Library to Help Patrons Become Extras in Movies

So you want to be in pictures? Come to the Athens-Clarke County Library to learn what it takes to be a film extra!

May's Community Snapshot program, "I Want to Be in Pictures," will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, and will feature locals Ted and Lois Brown and Danielle Robarge Rusk. The trio will share stories of their experiences as extras in movies and television shows and offer tips on how to get started in the industry.

"Being an extra is a lot of fun," Ted Brown said. "You don't make a lot of money, but it's a good activity for someone with time on their hands." Ted and Lois Brown began exploring the possibilities in the film industry last year when they retired and have worked on films including "The Spectacular Now," "Identity Thief," and the recently released "Devil's Knot," starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth.

"Most of the time, you're just a blur in the background. We've been in crowd scenes, in audience scenes, and even just walking down the street. For the TV show, 'Drop Dead Divas,' we had our photo taken because they needed a family portrait," Ted Brown said.

This program is made possible by a leadership grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services called "Reflecting, Sharing, Learning," awarded to the Athens Regional Library System and Lyndon House Arts Center.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place in the library's Multipurpose Room A. It will also be available for streaming via computer, tablet or mobile device; visit www.RSLathens.org for the link.
